The construction industry is about changing, creating and developing the built environment around us, and sustaining our physical surroundings. As all areas of the construction sector are expected to continue to grow over the next five year the construction sector offers wide ranging opportunities for graduates, ranging from construction and building services to architecture and surveying. New techniques and technologies, together with ever changing legislation within government policy means the construction industry is moving forward at a rapid pace. This sector consists of opportunities in private and public housing, institutional development e.g. school and hospitals and also industrial construction e.g. manufacturing facilities and general infrastructure repair and maintenance. The main areas of career opportunity for graduates who are interested in building a better environment for the future; surveying, architecture and construction and building services. Building surveyors work across all aspects of property and construction, advising on a wide range of different stages of building, and focusing on the aftercare and performance of existing buildings. They may be involved in; design, repair, maintenance, restoration and refurbishment, and this may be with regard to any magnitude of building project, be it a small residential house or a multi-million pound structure.

There is a real need for good quality graduates in the construction sector

Quantity surveyors manage and control costs within construction projects. There are many specific areas in which a quantity surveyor may concentrate, and there are 2 main types on quantity surveyor; those who carry out work on behalf of a client organisation, known as a 'Private Quantity Surveyor', and those who work for construction companies, known as 'Contractor's Quantity Surveyor'.

Architects focus on the design of new buildings and surrounding spaces, liaising directly with the client to match the exact specifications and needs. They will then in turn work closely with other professionals such as engineers and surveyors to make sure those specifications and standards are met, often being on-site with construction specialists to oversee the project in its entirety. Architects may work on new builds, design adjustments to existing buildings, or advising on the restoration of conservation of old buildings. To qualify as an architect both postgraduate study and considerable work experience are essential.
